From 2017 to 2020, Jan Utecht had the opportunity to portray metalheads – friends and musicians – in their private bedrooms across Europe and North America. Some of the portraits were taken on tour, before concerts or the day after. For others, he travelled many miles just for the photo. Several of the people featured in this book are pictured on posters that have hung on the walls of rehearsal rooms for decades, including his own. These band photos had a strong influence on Utecht’s initial experience with heavy metal music, particularly black metal.
Genuine Leather, a 160-page photobook, is a reflection of how he perceived this extreme style as a teenager and how he perceives it now as an adult.
